Do Not Forget is up and running again, but this time, we have added even more energy to activate change! Our non-profit organization is finally active again and have incorporated another working group to set in motion our plans.
Now, before we tell you who we are, let us tell you how we started. Hamzah Azzam founded the organization in the Summer of 2022, with the support of his friends and family and network, he was able to build the basis for what was going to become Do Not Forget, a non-profit organization whose mission is to try and help, as best we can, refugees’ children, families and communities. Our sole purpose is to help these communities reach their full potential.
Hamzah started this project with a little seed, where the root of it all derived from helping out the too-many refugees that are fleeing their homes and end up displaced in refugee camps. So Hamzah, with this seed, began locally. “You see, you cannot expect this project to work if you go from 0 to 100 too quickly”, he once said while talking about DNF, and this is why as of now, DNF focuses on Syrian and Palestenian refugees in Lebanon.
Hamzah’s little seed then started growing into a sapling. First it was just him, then the people around him began to help, and with this, a sturdy basis was made for DNF to kick off. Eventually, with the spread of awareness and their usage of the media, many others joined Do Not Forget.
That was how we started, thanks to Hamzah’s determination and hard-work. He took DNF out of Lebanon, and carried its ideals and goals all the way to Norway; and now, we can start telling you who we are. Norway, was where he added a fresh new piece to the DNF team. According to him “incorporating a new team in Norway broadens the horizons of our impact”, especially if this new team is composed of United World College students.
The United World College movement is an international network of schools that makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. It brings talented students from all over the world together through 18 schools spread across four continents. DNF is working alongside one of these schools, UWC Red Cross Nordic.
Us UWC students had to overcome numerous challenges to get accepted into our respective schools, and RCN is no exception; with 200 students coming from everywhere around the globe, we are all committed to being open-minded change-makers, and are ready to use our skills for projects as vital and valuable as DNF. Coming from a wide variety of backgrounds we are hoping that this component of diversity will be of a helping-hand to DNF by spreading the organization’s mission beyond the school, into our countries and hometowns.
The organization received a large number of applications, but had limited spots. The application process had two main stages: firstly the candidates had to fill in an application form with several questions about themselves, their work ethic and what they would be willing to bring to the table. Afterwards, the Board arranged individual interviews with the applicants whose applications stood out the most.
And finally, six new members were chosen! Each with a strong drive and enthusiasm that will water the little sapling that DNF is now at this stage. So let’s meet them!
-Sarah Abu Karsh-
Hello! My name is Sarah Abu Karsh, I'm from Ramallah, Palestine. I have been chosen to be the public speaker on behalf of Do Not Forget, and I'm looking forward to working with such an ambitious and hard-working team, who's willing to invest their time and effort on fulfilling set targets, to be able to help move forward with the aim of Do Not Forget , which's to aid refugees as much as possible.
-Carolina Sarti-
Hello! My name is Carolina! I am from Italy who has lived half of her life in Italy and the other half in Norway. I am incredibly happy and excited to be part of the DNF team, and I will be working as a writer! I think that the writing component of this project is of vital importance. It is the element of communication that allows for people to know about the crucial work the DNF does. Therefore, as the writer, I am expecting to become a sort of “reporter” and update you all on the news and work that DNF is undergoing as well as trying to explain as best I can all the difficult social dynamics that DNF works with.
-Aimar Armendáriz-
Hello everyone! My name is Aimar Armendáriz and I am from the north of Spain. I am going to be one of the writers of the organization, so I will be part of the team who oversees communication in its various forms. I believe that refugees are only people who have the same right to education and safety as anyone else, and I am willing to fight for that. I am really looking forward to contributing to the organization as a writer, because we shape our experience, and hence our reality, through our words. Let's use our language to create a world were everyone feels welcome and accepted!
-Nia Swift-
My name is Nia, I am from Cape Town, South Africa and I will be working as a graphic designer for DNF. I enjoy creative hobbies including digital art and creative writing. I love reading, mostly science fiction. I really love art and I take it HL at RCN. I’m very interested in fashion and I’m also a huge Formula 1 fan. I’m really looking forward to working with DNF for these next two years!
-Beatriz Neves-
Hi!! I'm Beatriz from Portugal and I will be working in Do NOT Forget as an operator doing on the field projects. I am super delighted to be part of this project! I am hoping to get opportunities to get to know new people and realities and do my best to better someone's day! A little fun fact about me is that I love to dance and one of my favorite animals are butterflies <33
-Julian Bjerke-
Hello, my name is Julian Bjerke and I am part of the operations team. Currently studying at UWC Red Cross Nordic, but I was born and raised in southern Sweden. I am especially interested in economics, political philosophy and international relations, and strongly believe in justice and equality. As I said, I was fortunate enough to get accepted as a member of the operations team, and I am looking forward to working together with the group to make a change and impact our society in a positive way.
The new team has already turned on the engine, and there are lots of ideas that are being brainstormed. So to salute you readers, here is a little peek into the future of DNF from Hamzah: “The following few projects will focus heavily on helping people in many fields, one of which may be financially and academically. Also, the organization is in the process of making great connections with international organizations.”
